Google Adwords Geographic Targeting

How to get target the correct audience for your website

We have had numerous queries regarding Google Adwords geographic targeting. In summary, Google recognizes a searcher’s physical location by their IP address. This means that businesses advertising on Google Adwords (sponsored links) are able to effectively target their prospective client base.

For example, if you are a local dentist serving your local community, you may wish to target White Rock and Surrey only, or perhaps a 20km radius around your office. If, on the other hand, you sell products to the contiguous states of USA, then you can target USA as a country, and exclude Alaska and Hawaii.

So, you can fine tune where you advertise on Google, but how about when? Google adverts are, by default, shown 24/7. However, this can be adjusted to suit your business model. If, for example, the call to action on your website is a phone call, you may wish to restrict the Google campaign to only run during your working hours. Google campaigns can be adjusted on the fly. If you close for 2 weeks during the summer, then you may wish to “pause” your campaign during that period. If your business is highly seasonal you can adjust your budget upwards during your busy times, and get the visits when you need them!
